A popular movie in 2018, Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum is planned to be a Hollywood version of the remake. Hollywood Reporter reports that a US company, Black Box Management joined BH Entertainment based in Seoul to produce Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum in the US version.
As reported by BBC, the two companies recently signed a new strategic partnership, and an upcoming remake will mark their first joint project.
Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum a horror film about a group of people exploring an abandoned mental hospital while broadcasting their adventures live. Produced with a budget of only USD2.2 million, this film managed to reap more than USD20 million worldwide.
‘We thank our friends at (South Korean distributor) Showbox for putting their trust in us to develop Gonjiam for US viewers. Korea has become a second home for us, and we are eager to help share the entertainment and culture that has captured the world’s attention,’ said Mitra Black Box, Mike Dill and Lowell Shapiro.
Meanwhile, Head of International Development BH Entertainment, Charles Pak explained, as Parasite has proven, tastes for Korean content have never been higher before.
‘The (our) partnership will advance the exchange and development of Korean and US adaptations, remakes, and originals for the Korean and US markets,’ said Charles Pak.
